Surface Coatings

Sylmasta epoxy coatings are applied to pipes for protection against corrosion and to strengthen structures further as the third stage of the Sylmasta Pipe Refurbishment System.

A surface coating provides an impermeable membrane in the event of a future breach due to internal corrosion. It maximises surface contact area with the composite wrap added at stage four and increases adhesion.

Liquid Metal is a brush applied, solvent-free epoxy liquid for corrosion protection, creating load-transfer layers and high-strength adhesion. It has a 90 minute gel time, allowing larger quantities to be mixed without the worry that it will cure before completion.

Its longer pot-life at higher ambient temperatures makes it suitable for use in warmer climates. The composite wrap is applied over Liquid Metal once the surface layer has gelled but remains tacky.

Titanium Supergrade HT is an epoxy paste which is spread thinly over the pipe using a trowel, knife or other hand tool. It has a longer working time than Liquid Metal for larger jobs and is suitable for high temperature applications up to 250°C. The composite wrap is applied to Titanium Supergrade immediately.

Surface coating is recommended for the optimum pipe repair. However, sometimes it is not used due to reasons of cost; if the user is satisfied that leaks caused by internal corrosion will not occur, or if the exterior pipe surface is in sufficiently good condition to be wrapped directly over with the composite layer.

With neither Liquid Metal nor Titanium Supergrade effective underwater, Sylmasta recommend the use of SylWrap CR Corrosion Protection Wrap for providing corrosion protection in marine environments. SylWrap CR comes with additional corrosion inhibitors and is applied directly to pipes underwater.

Once you have selected your surface coating, you move onto stage four of the Sylmasta Pipe Refurbishment System – Composite Wrap.
